Honduran President-Elect to Hold Talks with Trump on Trade, Immigration
The meeting will be the first face-to-face encounter between the two leaders since Trump publicly endorsed Asfura during the 2025 presidential campaign, a move that sparked criticism and accusations of foreign interference.
Honduran Foreign Minister Mireya Aguero confirmed at a press briefing that the meeting is scheduled for this weekend. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and a Honduran delegation are also expected to participate.
“I believe this is a historic meeting. Rarely do we see such a high-level encounter so soon after a president’s inauguration. To echo the president’s words, Honduras is going to be fine,” Aguero said.
Honduras’ Secretary of the Presidency, Juan Carlos Garcia, explained that Asfura plans to focus on the situation of Honduran citizens living in the US and address tariffs imposed on Honduran exports.
“The most important issues are the more than two million Hondurans living abroad. Let us remember that we receive over $11 billion in remittances,” Garcia stated.
The country has been affected by Trump’s global trade policies, including a 10% tariff on all Honduran exports, which has significantly impacted the economy. Nearly half of Honduras’ exports—46.2%, equivalent to $3.99 billion—go to the United States.
Since last year’s election, the Trump administration has loomed over the new Honduran government, with the former US president endorsing Asfura and warning that assistance could be withheld if he lost.
